“VTA serves one of the most diverse counties in the country,” VTA Board Chair Sergio Lopez, who called for the policy alongside several of his colleagues, told San José Spotlight. “This is absolutely something our community wants and needs to feel safe.” Lopez has called for a similar policy in Campbell where he is a councilmember.

“I think, having grown up in Campbell, what stands out for me is what a welcoming community it’s always been, so we are really proud of our history. But refusing to change doesn't mean you preserve the past,” he said. “We tend to look at a lot of the state legislation as an opportunity — giving us new tools in the toolbox to diversify.”

Campbell Mayor Sergio Lopez said he’s heard from many residents who are concerned about the “abrupt cancellation of this contract and what that signals about the federal administration.” The city’s history of hosting naturalization ceremonies “holds a lot of significance” not just for the community, but for himself personally, he said. Lopez’s parents were sworn in as citizens at the Heritage Theatre — an event he described as a “beautiful outpouring of community.”

Campbell Mayor Sergio Lopez never wanted to be in the spotlight ... After his parents lost their restaurant and had to foreclose on their home during the Great Recession, he felt compelled to enter public service to tackle cost-of-living challenges at their roots.

Lopez is also the youngest chair in the board’s history, and said his personal experience growing up using VTA transit service shaped his decision to enter the public service sector.

Lopez said housing and business do not have to be at odds with each other as the city grows. “I think for a long time, the paradigm was seeing these things as opposed and that is something that I think has really shifted in the past few years, where addressing our housing crisis is one of the best ways forward economic development,” he told San José Spotlight.

For the past year, I’ve had the honor of serving Campbell, California, where I was born and raised, as a newly elected city councilmember ... Today, however, my hometown, like so many places across the country, faces a housing crisis that threatens those bonds of community.

Campbell, Calif., where I serve, is part of the San Jose metro region, the most unaffordable housing market in the entire United States. I grew up here and experienced housing insecurity myself—my childhood family home was lost to foreclosure—so I’ve made housing a central focus.

“Our small businesses are struggling and our housing crisis is only getting worse,” he said. “I’m ready to get to work on these issues. I ran because I knew I was ready to do the job. ... I had a story and perspective and skills that were missing from the discussion and I can raise up the voices of many communities being left out.”

What role does religion have to play for a leader facing his darkest hours? In the midst of civil war, in the valley of despair, Mr. Lincoln grappled with this question.

Last year I launched my campaign for city council in Campbell, California, the community where I’d grown up. If I win, I will be the only millennial and person of color on a city council that represents a very diverse community.

The policy – which defines migrant workers differently than any other state or federal agency – requires that those who live in any one of California’s 24 migrant housing centers move every six months, at least 50 miles away.
